Beautiful Spanish town where the locals go on holiday home to the best ice cream

A town in Spain has recently seen one of its businesses being awarded an international and prestigious acknowledgement.

Torre Del Mar, a seaside resort on the eastern Costa del Sol, is a summer destination beloved particularly by Spaniards from Madrid, Jaen and Granada.

Originally a fishing village, this town has also attracted the attention of Britons and Germans, many of whom have decided to relocate there.

Torre, as this town in the province of Malaga is often referred to locally, counts more than 22,000 residents and is home to a number of landmarks such as the House of the Vineyard and the Old Castle.

Moreover, the town also has several stunning shops and businesses. Among them is Sicilia Gelati, an ice cream parlour which was recently awarded a sought-after prize in Rome.

The Italian Gelato Association held the “World Cup” of ice cream in Rome’s Olympic Stadium, with the title of “Cavaliere del Gelato”, or Knight of the ice cream, up for grabs.

This title, the highest possible accolade awarded to ice cream makers who “defend the traditional product”, was conquered by the only Spanish contender – and owner of Sicilia Gelati – Juanma Guerrero.

Before earning the title of Cavaliere, Mr Guerrero had to undergo a long process, which included providing videos of himself showing how he makes his gelato.

Once in Rome, he had to compete with other gelato maestros and made turron ice cream.

Mr Guerrero opened his store just two years ago – but quickly became a roaring success among locals and visitors.

He prepares his sweet treats free from gluten and chemicals in an open kitchen and abides by traditional Sicilian methods.

Mr Guerrero’s gelato, which is offered in a wide range of flavours including coconut and lemon essence, is just one of the delicacies that can be tried once in Torre.

The town’s traditional gastronomic speciality is the “pescaíto”, a feast of fried fish. 

In line with its past as a fishing village, the are also offers the outstanding Espeto, sardines skewered and roasted over a barbeque pit, as well as the Pipirrana, a salad which include tuna, mussels and vegetables.
