The Met Office has issued an urgent 36-hour weather warning for parts of Britain with a risk of power cuts and floods. A wall of rain is due to hit from Saturday afternoon, with a yellow weather alert in place from 6pm.

The forecaster has warned this will continue until 11.59pm on Sunday, as hellish storms will be unleashed on north western Scotland.

Traffic disruption is also to be expected as “spray and floodingย is likely” to lead to a number of road closures.

The Met Office warning said “flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely” with “a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads”.

Flooding could also cause delays, disruption and cancellations on public transport.

Met Office chief forecaster, Paul Gundersen said: “Later next week and the days running up to Christmas there are some suggestions that the jet stream will drift further south, allowing conditions to turn more widely unsettled.

“There is also a chance of winds switching to more of a northwesterly direction, allowing conditions to become a little colder, with a risk of some wintry showers developing in the north.

“At this stage there is very little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather.โ€
