Real reason why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘only work one hour a week’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Archewell Foundation has released its public disclosure of its accounts for 2022.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are both directors for the Archewell Foundation. The IRS filing shows they each worked just one hour a week for the philanthropic organisation last year. However, according to a legal expert, there's an explanation for this.

Attorney Seth Perlman, partner of Perlman & Perlman LLP, previously told Newsweek that filings showing an average one hour working week are not unusual for directors of philanthropic organisations. It is also the same working week as was shown on Archewell's filings for 2021.

Perlman explained: "If you have four board meetings a year—that's what directors do, they hold board meetings—then that turns into basically 12 hours a quarter. Which is, you know, a sufficient amount of time and a typical amount of time for board members to act."

As such, he said it would be "unfair" to criticise Harry and Meghan. He explained: "The position of directors is to establish the mission and the vision, make sure that they hire the right people to carry that out, determine the governance of the organisation, make sure that the financials are being properly overseen and make sure they fully understand the financials of the organisation and then, if they do make grants to approve those grants."

On the Archewell website, the foundation is described as "an impact-driven global nonprofit that puts compassion into action; uplifting and uniting communities locally and globally; online and offline". It adds that the foundation's "core purpose is, quite simply, to do good".
