Singer’s glowing crown lights up celebrations at York Minster

1 min read

Linnea, raised in rural Sweden, played the role of martyred Saint Lucy during York Minster’s Festival of Light as she led the London Nordic Choir through the cathedral for the Advent service.

St Lucy was put to death in AD302 for refusing to make a sacrifice to the Roman emperor Diocletian.

In Sweden, celebrating St Lucy is one of the most significant religious traditions.

There she is revered as a bringer of light during the long Nordic winter.

The rest of the choir also carried candles, with St Lucy the focal point, a red ribbon round her waist, symbolising martyrdom.

The service, run with the York Anglo-Scandinavian Society, was live-streamed on YouTube.

Pernilla Tweddle, from the society, said: “The heart-warming tradition of Sankta Lucia brings a sense of continuity, joy and light to people across Scandinavia.

“We are delighted to bring this atmospheric service to York Minster for the tenth year.”
