Met Office issues new yellow weather warnings as wind and rain threatens weekend

3 min read

The Met Office has issued another spate of yellow weather warnings affecting huge swathes of the UK today (Saturday, December 9) as Brits brace for more wind and rain.

Three separate warnings are in place today across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It comes after people across the country spent the last week battling rainy deluges, slippery ice and plummeting temperatures.

A large chunk of the UK including Wales, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, the north and southwest of England have been handed a warning for strong winds. In areas near the Irish Sea gusts could reach up to 70mph while other regions will see wind speeds of 55mph.

The wind warning will start at 9am today and last until 11.45pm. Another warning for rain is in place across Devon and Dorset, where the forecaster stressed "flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible" and said transport would likely be affected.

This weather warning is already in place, having been issued for 1am this morning. It will be lifted at 9am.

A separate warning, also for rain, is in place in the southwest of Scotland, encompassing parts of the Scottish Borders, Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Dumfries and Galloway and and Argyll and Bute. This came into effect at 6pm yesterday evening and will last until 9pm.

The Met Office said of the unpleasant conditions: "Bands of heavy rain will bring a risk of localised flooding and some travel disruption Friday night and Saturday." It also warned houses and businesses may be flooded and transport could be affected by the inclement weather and added: "Some interruption to power supplies and other services possible."

The forecaster added up to 80mm of rain could fall across parts of the country.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said yesterday: "We're in for a wet and windy weekend. From 6pm tonight a band of heavy wind and rain will move through Scotland. There's a possibility of flooding because of the already saturated ground.

"Another band will move tomorrow morning from the south-west of the UK towards the north-east, bringing with it heavy rain for much of the country. By the afternoon most of the heavy wind and rain will have passed and it will just be showers for southern areas.

"We will also be seeing some quite strong winds in Wales, the Midlands, northern England and Northern Ireland, particularly coastal communities around the Irish Sea."
