A British family’s getaway to Vietnam has ended in tragedy after a boy aged 12 died after being pulled unresponsive from a swimming pool.
Otis Walder-Robb was on holiday with his dad Stephen Walder, stepmother Liz Robb and six-year-old sister Betty while the family volunteered at a summer camp for local Vietnamese children.
Following what has been called a “tragic accident” by a family friend, Otis had to be carried out of the water by four other children before desperate attempts at resuscitation sadly failed.
Otis was taken to a hospital later the same day, July 7, but was pronounced dead.

Otis lived in Thailand and was originally from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire. Tributes from the 12-year-old’s friends have been shared widely praising an “amazing boy!”
A post reported by ITV read: “Fly high you amazing boy! You was so loved and so caring by many!
“My thoughts are with all the family and all the extended family you have made while travelling with the best people Elizabeth Robb and Stephen Walder and little Betty. Sending lots of hugs and love!”
A fundraising page has been set up by a family friend named Gemma Anjamanee Piya Tora Lewis to help with the cost of relocating Otis’ body and flying the family back home.

Writing on the GoFundMe page, Mrs Lewis said: “Otis Walder-Robb was 12 years old when he took his last breath at 7.57pm on 7-7-2023. We regret to share that his passing was of sudden consequence from a tragic accident.
“There is grief and deep sorrow amidst the family’s hearts, and a growing community is in mourning.
“We wish to use all funding towards the funeral expenses and memorial of Otis, and to cover all travel and health care costs in returning him, his sister Betty, and his parents Steven and Liz, to home soil, so the family and their community can celebrate and hold a ceremony for his life.’
She added: “The family were temporarily visiting Vietnam due to working away at a children’s summer camp.”

“We’re all desperate to get their 6-year-old daughter back to our community so she can be in a familiar environment with friends who dearly miss her.”
The tragic incident comes after Mr Walder’s former partner, Otis’ mother Cathy Temple, passed away in 2017 from breast at the age of 33.
The family was struck once again by tragedy when Cathy and Stephen’s son Rueben, 10, died from brain cancer.
