Japanese officials considering supporting Ukraine’s recovery attempts

1 min read

A leading Japanese official says he wants to see the country supporting Ukraine’s recovery after the Russian invasion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoshimasa Hayashi says he wants Japan’s own recovery from war and natural disasters to act as an inspiration for Ukraine as it looks to rebuild parts of the nation.

It is now over one year and four months since Vladimir Putin’s Russia moved onto Ukrainian soil. It has resulted in the largest refugee crisis since World War II and led to thousands of deaths.

But, during a visit to the United Kingdom Mr Hayashi said there was a growing momentum for private and public corporations to work together to repair Ukraine, reports Japanese news outlet NHK.

Mr Hayashi said both public and private sectors came together during the Great East Japan Earthquake and the efforts after the war. NHK also says Japan could consider providing financial support for Ukraine.

Mr Hayashi is quoted as saying: “I would like to lead the discussion in the international community toward the restoration of peace and the realization of reconstruction as soon as possible as the chair of the G7 seven major countries this year.”
