On the day of his death, he took part in an influencer battle, competing with fellow internet stars to earn the most amount of gifts from fans in a limited time.

As punishment for losing three of his rounds, he drank at least seven bottles of baijiu, viewers told the BBC.

After Wang ended his livestream at around midnight on Tuesday, he was found dead on Wednesday afternoon.

"When his family found him, he was already gone, he didn't even get a chance for emergency treatment," a man named Mr Zhao, who claimed to be his friend, told local media.

The social media app he was popular on already bans users for drinking during livestreams.
