London will be ‘turned to dust,’ says Russian TV host, after NATO weapons deal

3 min read

Putin’s propaganda squad are whipping ordinary Russians up into an anti-British frenzy as the war in Ukraine approaches its first anniversary.

Last night Vladimir Solovyov, who has been a staunch supporter of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine since day one, raved about a nuclear strike on London as well as a Russian armoured assault on Germany.

Furious about reports of British military hardware being supplied to Kyiv, Solovyov stared directly into the camera lens and vowed “London will turn to dust. To dust!”

Switching briefly to English, as if to address Brits directly, he then yelled “Burn in hell!” and “Flames!”

Solovyov has made innumerable bizarre pronouncements over the past 12 months, including the destruction of Britain and the return of Stalin’s feared SMERSH spy agency, but this is perhaps his most unhinged broadcast yet.

He raved about support for Ukraine in the British media, saying: “The British press is saying ‘We’ll give them hell’ – I’m quoting verbatim from their most popular paper The Sun”.

Solovyov’s information is slightly out of date there. The Sun is no longer the most popular UK newspaper, although its bosses stopped publishing exact circulation figures in 2020 making a precise ranking impossible.

He aisles said that the supply of German-made Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine made Germany “a direct party to the conflict” and that it was now time to “send a clear, resolute message” to Russia ’s old enemy.

Moscow TV pundit Yevgeny Satanovsky added that Russia’s nuclear weapons should be unleashed on Berlin and in particular the German parliament, the Bundestag, reducing it to “flat, slightly radioactive, melted-down ground”.

Putin’s propaganda mouthpieces have repeatedly warned that the war in Ukraine could spark a nuclear conflict, probably in hope of weakening Western support for Zelenskyy’s beleaguered country.

There have been concerns raised among some EU politicians that Russia's nuclear rhetoric may be more than just bluff and bluster.

Stefano Sannino, secretary general of the EU’s European External Action Service, fears the “game-changing” deal among Western leaders to deliver cutting-edge battlefield tanks to Ukraine will ignite a potentially devastating retaliation from Russia.

Putin has even in the past claimed that NATO leaders were the ones threatening nuclear escalation.

In a speech following his “partial mobilisation” of Russian reservists in September last year, he accused the West of engaging in “nuclear blackmail” and said there had been “statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility of using nuclear weapons of mass destruction against Russia.”

He did not name the NATO officials who had made the alleged threats.

In the same week, his supporter Sergei Markov warned: “In Russia there’s partial mobilisation and for your British listeners Vladimir Putin told you that he would be ready to use nuclear weapons against Western countries, including nuclear weapons against Great Britain.”

In the interview on BBC News, Markov added: “Your cities will be targeted”.
