Britain’s sex pest cops – the predators in uniform who abused their positions

4 min read

The police are supposed to be there to protect us – but some of them aren't always what they seem.

After cases involving the likes of David Carrick, who abused more than a dozen women while serving as a Met Police officer, some have begun to lose faith in the badge.

Here are some of the UK's most notorious sex pest cops who have lost their jobs after abusing their power.

David Carrick

Known as "B*****d Dave", PC David Carrick confessed to 49 offences, including 24 counts of rape, on January 16 this year.

The former Met Police officer, 48, committed crimes against more than a dozen women over an 18-year period after starting at the force in 2001.

His crimes included keeping victims hostage in a small cupboard under the stairs of his Hertfordshire home and forcing them to clean his house naked.

Southwark Crown Court was told he met some of his victims online and used his job title to earn their trust.

Darren Williams

Ex-Metropolitan Police chief superintendent Darren Williams got the boot after he confessed to sticking his tongue in two female police officers' ears and stroking their necks.

Williams was dismissed from his post after being found guilty of misconduct in April 2015.

The rogue police chief was also found to have imitated a sex act with a banana in front of a woman who was trying to give a radio interview and rubbing another female officer's scarf on his crotch.

Williams' barrister, John Beggs, said his dismissal was unlawful and claimed his behaviour was a symptom of PTSD.

John Hetterley

This Kent Police officer initially managed to hold onto his job after he lifted up a female colleague's skirt but was eventually sacked after he sexually harassed another woman at work.

PC John Hetterley hounded a fellow officer both in person and via text, demanding a sexual relationship from her, despite her making it clear she wasn't interested.

Hetterley attended a hearing in August 2020 after she rejected his advances in November 2018 but continued to be harassed by the rogue cop.

The woman described how his behaviour caused her "distress of an unacceptable kind in her ordinary work environment".

This wasn't Hetterley's first conduct hearing, however – he was given a final warning in 2016 after he lifted up a different colleague's skirt during a boozy night out and pinched her bottom.

Anthony Smith

Another rogue officer from the Met, Anthony Smith, was jailed for 24 years last August after he was found guilty of raping three girls over a period of several years.

Smith, 56, was found guilty at Guilford Crown Court of 13 counts of rape and sexual assault from 1993 to 1997, when he was working as a policeman.

He left the Met in 2004 after he was convicted of gross indecency with a child in an unrelated case, and his crimes against the three girls emerged in 2020 when one of his victims came forward, prompting the others to follow suit.

One told the court: "To the outside world you were a pillar of the community, a shining example of a police officer – yet here you were, abusing your position of trust, making me feel powerless, guilty and ashamed of what I was being made to do."

James Ford

Ford, 31, was working for Hertfordshire Police when he was found guilty of 10 counts of sexual abuse against one child.

The former intervention officer raped and assaulted the child repeatedly between 2019 and 2021 before being suspended from his duties in relation to the case.

He was jailed for 18 years last October after being found guilty of four counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, as well as wiping his phone to hide evidence.

The judge in the case, Mr Justice Simon Bryan, described the offences as a "horrific catalogue of serious sexual offending against a young child".
