Police have launched a murder inquiry into the death of a man following a Christmas Day 'attack'.
Just after 11 pm on Christmas, the police were alerted by the ambulance service that a man had been found injured on a street in Houghton.
Emergency services scrambled to respond to the call and discovered a man in his 30s with a serious injury.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man passed away due to his grievous wounds.
An investigation was launched by Northumbria Police into the circumstances of this shocking incident. Officers remain at the scene today.
A spokesperson has now confirmed that a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
It is believed that there is no wider threat to the public and all parties are known to each other.
They also confirmed that the victim’s next of kin are being supported by specialist family liaison officers at this difficult time.
Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this truly devastating time.

"All parties are believed to be known to each other and there is no wider threat to the public.
