Nicola Sturgeon said it was “difficult” to see how Boris Johnson could make the right political decisions with regards to coronavirus considering the political anguish he is currently suffering. Ms Sturgeon attacked the Prime Minister and suggested he could be too slow in tackling the spread of the Omicron variant as she explained people in England “deserve” a politician with “courage”. But the First Minister did not stop there, arguing Scotland was being let down by financial support and that the UK could not afford the “political chaos” happening in Westminster right now.

Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, Ms Sturgeon was asked whether she thinks England will follow the rules and guidance in Scotland considering both governments being concerned over the Omicron variant.

Scotland has maintained mask-wearing despite England removing mandatory use in July with MPs voting on reintroducing masks for nearly all public venues.

Ms Sturgeon also announced government guidance over Christmas where she told Scots to not mix with more than three households over the holidays.

Host Lorraine wondered if Boris Johnson would follow Scotland’s example with Ms Sturgeon taking aim at the Conservative Government.

She explained: “I don’t know, looking in the House of Commons [on Tuesday] it’s difficult to see how Boris Johnson can take the necessary action to protect public health.

“But I hope he does have the ability to do that if necessary, it’s not so much as following me.

“This virus does not wait for politicians to get their act together, it is going to spread like wildfire if we don’t act to slow it down…

“People like me don’t have the luxury to say what are the politics here – we’ve got to act – and I hope Boris Johnson whatever political travails he is suffering right now has the courage of his convictions and the ability to do what is necessary.

“I think people in England deserve that”.

Ms Sturgeon went on and said there were “complicated funding arguments” where Scotland only receives support if England does in a sly dig to the Treasury.

She added if Mr Johnson did not act for the benefit of England then it does not trickle down to Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

The First Minister appeared to be referencing the Barnett Formula which is used to designate funding to UK Governments depending on England expenditure and takes into account population.

Ms Sturgeon concluded: “The political situation in Westminster right now in normal times would have somebody like me would be looking at it and saying Boris Johnson is having some difficulties.

“But actually, health and lives are on the line right now, we can’t afford to have this kind of political chaos.”
