Relations between Meghan Markle and the royals back in the UK these days are said to be 'frosty' at best — but it wasn't so long ago that she was being extended an extra-special festive welcome by Her Majesty.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they will not be visiting the Queen at the Palace this Christmas, despite the exceptionally difficult year the 95-year-old monarch has had.

But the 'special treatment' afforded to her in 2017 after the couple announced their engagement was far beyond anything experienced by Kate Middleton when she first became attached the Royal Family.

The monarch extended the pair an invite to join the royals for Christmas that year, despite the fact she had not yet married into the family.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge meanwhile had to wait once she had married William in 2011 before being she was allowed to spend Yuletide at Sandringham.

Meghan can even be seen walking with William and Kate to church for the annual Christmas Day service in newly resurfaced photographs.

Just over two years before 'Megxit' saw the pair 'step back' from The Firm, the Daily Star reported that the soon-to-be-bride made a good impression on the family with an amusing gift.

Despite all the pressure of buying a present for the Queen, Meghan’s choice, albeit cheap and tacky, was a resounding success.

A Royal source revealed that Meghan’s present for Her Maj was a singing toy hamster.

But when Her Majesty opened it, she only had little time to laugh before her corgis snatched it off her.

The source said: “Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty.

“It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy."

Princess Beatrice was allowed to bring then-fiance Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi for the festive holidays in 2019, suggesting that the marriage requirement has now been lifted.
