Sarah Everard's mum and dad said they are "very pleased" at the whole life sentencing vile killer Wayne Couzens' sentencing.

Speaking after the sentencing, Sarah's family have said they are “very pleased” that her killer will spend the rest of his life in jail, adding that they are “outraged and sickened” that he abused his position of trust as a police officer “in order to lure Sarah to her death”.

Couzens was imprisoned for the rest of his life when he was handed a whole life order for raping, killing and burning the body of 33-year-old Sarah Everard on March 3 this year.

It is the first time a police officer has ever been handed such a sentence. The only other single-offence murderer to have been handed a whole life order was the neo-Nazi murderer of MP Jo Cox, Thomas Mair.

In the wake of the sentencing, the Everard family released a statement that read: "We are very pleased that Wayne Couzens has received a full life sentence and will spend the rest of his life in jail.

"Nothing can make things better, nothing can bring Sarah back, but knowing he will be imprisoned forever brings some relief.

"Sarah lost her life needlessly and cruelly and all the years of life she had yet to enjoy were stolen from her.

"Wayne Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death. The world is a safer place with him imprisoned.

"It is almost seven months since Sarah died and the pain of losing her is overwhelming. We miss her all the time.

"She was a beautiful young woman in looks and character and our lives are the poorer without her. We remember all the lovely things about Sarah – her compassion and kindness, her intelligence, her strong social conscience.

"But we especially like to remember her laughing and dancing and enjoying life. We hold her safe in our hearts.

"We are immensely grateful to the police and legal team who worked on Sarah’s case.

"We cannot thank them enough for their meticulous and painstaking work and for their constant support. We also send our heartfelt thanks to our family and friends for comforting us through this terrible time."

The sentence means Couzens will not be given the chance at a conditional release or parole. As the judge passed sentence, Jeremy and Susan clasped each other's hands and briefly smiled.

Jeremy and Susan Everard bravely appeared and spoke at the Old Bailey for the twisted murderer's sentencing yesterday and today.

Yesterday Sarah's dad spoke directly to Couzens, 48.

In a striking confrontation he spelled out the exact consequences of Sarah's sickening rape and murder.

Mr Everard told Couzens: "Please look at me.

“The impact of what you have done will never end.

"A father wants to look after his children and fix everything, and you have deliberately and with premeditation stopped my ability to do that.”

Mum Susan said she has nightmares and "silent screams" at 9.30pm every night, the time Sarah was abducted by Couzens under the false pretences of police duties.

She told the Old Bailey she repeats: “Don’t get in the car, Sarah. Don’t believe him. Run!”

Ex-Metropolitan Police officer Couzens used the excuse of Covid regulations to put her in his car, where she was tied up and driven to his home in Kent.

There Sarah was raped and strangled to death and her body burned.
