A petrol station worker was allegedly shot and killed for asking a customer to put on a face mask.

The 20-year-old cashier in Idar-Oberstein, west Germany, died of gunshot wounds on Saturday, September 18, after a disagreement with a shopper over Covid regulations.

The suspect, a 49-year-old man, is thought to have left the store after being asked to wear a mask before returning.

At that point he was wearing a face covering – and reportedly wielding a gun.

After another argument between the two, he shot the youngster, it is claimed.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot, public prosecutor Kai Fuhrmann told news agency DPA.

Fuhrmann said the cashier, who has not been named, "saw no other way out" of the disagreement than to take the shopper to task.

The suspect told officers he felt "stressed out" by coronavirus measures, prompting the attack.

He held cashier "responsible for the overall situation because he enforced the rules".

Local police said the shooting was the first such case related to Covid safety measures in the region.

Mayor Frank Frühauf said they were horrified by the violent crime.

He told reporters: "This is a quite inconceivable, terrible act that has happened here in Idar-Oberstein.

"Such a crime is unprecedented.

"It will take time to come to terms with it."

Anti-vaxxers and Covid-sceptic campaigners have become increasingly militant as the pandemic has progressed.

That's despite numerous members of both groups dying of the disease.

An anti-vax mum of four who boasted she was "unmasked, unmuzzled, unvaccinated and unafraid" died of coronavirus in California earlier this week.

A crowdfunder set up by loved ones to help pay for her funeral has already raised more than $10,000.
