Monster hyena seen attacking pensioner after infection triggers frenzied rampage

2 min read

Terrifying footage has emerged of a hyena jumping out of the bushes and attacking a pensioner in front of shocked villagers.

The incident happened in the Kharpudi village of Khed taluka in the Indian city of Pune on Sunday (September 7).

Video widely shared online shows the old man carrying a bucket and holding a walking stick while his dog follows behind.

Seconds later, a hyena appears from the bush and leaps at the pensioner, sinking its claws into his legs.

A passerby quickly turns around and tries desperately to get the beast off the man.

Officials from the Junnar division of Conservator of Forests reported that the hyena also attacked a biker in a separate incident.

Deputy forest guardian Jayaram Gowda R told Indian Express that the animal was suffering an infection prior to the attacks and was later found dead.

He said: "One elderly person and a biker have been injured in the attack by a hyena in Kharpudi village.

"Attacks by hyenas are not very common. We have come to know that the hyena was already injured when it attacked the two persons.

"The animal was found dead later. We believe that the irritation caused by the injury may have triggered the attack."

The elderly man attacked by the hyena was hospitalised and is being monitored, said forest officials, who have reached out to provide compensation.

Several forested patches in Khed tehsil are home to a number of hyenas.

Closer to home, a man in North Wales was left shaken when he believed he was stalked by a big cat while walking his dog.

The local resident of St Asaph became aware of a large creature about the size of a "border collie sheepdog" when he was walking further away from the town centre.
