Reporting live from Kabul, CNN’s Clarissa Ward sparked an almighty backlash as she claimed the Taliban “seem friendly” as they made horrific chants on wishing “death” on the United States. Her comments prompted social media users to take to Twitter to vent their anger at the comments, while Republican Senator Ted Cruz branded her a “Taliban cheerleader” as she wore a headdress in order to remain safe in the presence of the Taliban. CNN later hit back at Mr Cruz branding him “low class” and for “running off to Cancun in tough times”.
Ms Ward said: “They are just chanting ‘death to America’ but they seem friendly at the same time.
“It is utterly bizarre.”
Her comments led to conservative commentator Darren Grimes sarcastically tweeting “Yes, CNN. They seem lovely.”
While another user referenced two different pictures showing the same reporter wearing a different dress code, reflecting the Taliban’s strict views on women.

They said: “The Taliban are sooo ‘friendly’ that the female CNN reporter went from dressing like a free woman to covered head to toe in black in 24 hours because of… I guess… “friendship.”
But Ms Ward hit back at the comment saying the photos were innacurate, she said: “The top photo is inside a private compound. The bottom is on the streets of Taliban held Kabul.
“I always wore a headscarf on the street in Kabul previously, though not w/ hair fully covered and abbaya.
“So there is a difference but not quite this stark.”

While Senator Ted Cruz hit out, tweeting: “Is there an enemy of America whom CNN WON’T cheerlead? (In mandatory burkas, no less).”
But his response triggered a furious backlash from CNN HQ who jumped to the defence of Ms Ward.
CNN Communications slammed: “Rather than running off to Cancun in tough times, (Clarissa Ward) is risking her life to tell the world what’s happening.
“That’s called bravery. Instead of RTing a conspiracy theorist’s misleading soundbite, perhaps your time would be better spent helping Americans in harm’s way.”
