Woman’s dismembered body found in national park with hand and foot missing

2 min read

An investigation is underway by the FBI after a woman's dismembered body was discovered near Camp David, Maryland.

Hikers staying at Catoctin Mountain Park found the skeletal remains on Saturday close to the famous presidential retreat.

Authorities have now released images of the woman's black jacket, handbag, red Nike sneakers and keys in an effort to identify the body.

The woman had likely been deceased between one and six months based on the state of her remains and clothing, investigators said.

"It’s sad. It’s disheartening. This person has a story to tell," Richard Ruggieri FBI special agent The Washington Post.

He added: "First, we need to figure out who it is to tell the story."

Investigators found the woman's foot around 100 yards from the rest of her body.

Her second foot and one of her hands remain missing.

A "love", blue turtle and El Salvador key-rings were also found at the scene, along with a glitter-covered protective spray.

A cause of death has not yet been announced but investigators commented that "everything is on the table."

FBI special agent Richard Ruggieri said his "gut' is that the woman's death was criminal.

There were no reports of missing hikers in the area that matched her remains and no abandoned car has been located at the scene.

In a statement, the FBI said: "The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Baltimore Field Office is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying a woman whose body was found at Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, Maryland, on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

"Law Enforcement Agencies responded to the National Park Saturday afternoon after a portion of the woman’s body was discovered by hikers in the surrounding area of the Park."

They added: "The cause of death is still pending an autopsy. Based on the condition of the body, it is unclear how long it was there.

"The woman had long, dark hair with braids. She was wearing a black track suit, wrist guard, and red Nike shoes. She was also found with a Puma handbag and a set of keys containing an El Salvador keychain.

"The National Park Service is supporting the FBI during this investigation."
