Mum with two killer boyfriends in jail tried to help current lover avoid arrest

4 min read

A mum who helped her killer partner flee from police now has boyfriends past and present serving life sentences for murder.

Sarah Clarke is facing jail for her actions in the aftermath of the killing of Warren Glover in St Helens, Merseyside, the Liverpool Echo has revealed.

She hid killer Stephen Strutt in a hotel after he took part in a "revenge" attack on 33-year-old Mr Glover last summer.

Strutt was captured on CCTV stopping to buy beer on his way from Manchester to Merseyside to hunt down Mr Glover.

The 39-year-old's close friend Aaron Stubbs then hit the dad-of-one over the head with an iron bar and left him to die.

Aaron, his sister Melissa Stubbs, Strutt and Strutt's brother-in-law Peter Walker were all found guilty of murder.

Clarke, 30, was convicted of assisting an offender when she stood trial alongside the four killers at Liverpool Crown Court.

Strutt lived with the mum-of-one and became a stepdad to her eight-year-old son.

The boy's father is another murderer: Damian 'Scarface' Gorman who carried out a pub assassination with infamous one-eyed cop killer Dale Cregan.

Clarke's relationship with him led to her facing a charge of intimidating a witness and giving evidence at Cregan's shocking murder trial.

She was ultimately acquitted of any wrongdoing in that case.

Cregan murdered PCs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, after luring them to false reports of a burglary in Manchester in September 2012.

In February 2013, Cregan stood trial with nine co-accused, including fellow cocaine dealer Gorman.

Preston Crown Court heard Clarke and Gorman had lived together for three years and that she had his son in September 2012.

Gorman, then 38, was accused of taking part in the killings of Mark Short and three counts of attempted murder in the same pub.

Clarke took to the witness stand as part of her boyfriend's defence.

The then 22-year-old told jurors she had been charged with intimidating a female witness, who had given evidence against Gorman.

She denied intimidating the woman.

The prosecution alleged the two "assassins" Cregan and Gorman went to clean up at Clarke's home after killing Mark Short and pointed to Gorman's clothing, found outside the property in bin bags, as evidence of this.

However, Clarke told jurors she had dumped Gorman's clothes outside the house they rented in Hollingworth, Tameside, when she moved out because Gorman had been jailed for 12 weeks over a previous matter.

Cregan admitted murdering Mark and Davis Short – following a decade-long feud between two local families – midway through the trial.

Clarke's evidence didn't help Gorman, who was found guilty by the jury of the murder of Mark Short and the attempted murder of three other men.

Her boyfriend was jailed for life with a minimum of 33 years behind bars in June 2013.

Clarke moved on from one killer boyfriend to the next.

A judge said Mr Glover was killed out of "vengeance" on June 13 last year, after he sent "offensive and provocative" texts to his ex-girlfriend Melissa, 30, her parents and friends.

Clarke insisted there was nothing sinister in her booking killer Strutt and herself into a hotel using someone else’s bank card when he was wanted by police.

However, prosecutors said she covered for him by telling the police he was working away and also withdrew money from his account on his behalf.

Clarke even tried to convince the jury that she had no idea he was wanted for murder.

Judge Denis Watson said it is "highly likely" she will face a jail term when she is sentenced on May 21.

The four killers were jailed for life with minimum prison sentences of at least 20 years.
