Melania Trump’s birthday hijacked as Donald uses online card to beg for cash

2 min read

Melania Trump's birthday on Monday was celebrated by Republicans – who used the occasion to beg supporters to donate to her ex-President husband Donald's party.

As the former US First Lady turned 51 on April 26, her husband's backers saw an opportunity to cash in on well-wishers who were advised to cough up $100 (£72) to "defend the Trump legacy".

Rather than figure out what the Republican party could possibly gift Donald Trump's, 74, third wife, organisers decided a digital card and rallying funds for their own political gain would do the trick.

Over the weekend emails and texts were fired off to Republican supporters, prompting them to sign a digital birthday card if they had not already done so, The Times reports.

In the style of Trump's old tweets scattered with capital letters, an email sent on Sunday read: "We know how much the First Lady means to YOU so we're going to give you ONE MORE chance to sign her card, but you must ACT FAST!"

Once party supporters had signed the birthday card, they were taken to a page that encouraged them to make a donation to make a sizeable donation to the party's coffers.

The recommended $100 option was automatically selected to remove any doubt of how much was appropriate to give.

The page which feature a snap of Melania, said: "We are working hard to defend the Trump Legacy from Biden and the Radical Left, but we need you to join us!

"We only need a few more donations today to stay on track will you quickly step up and help close the gap?"

This was not the first time Republican party supporters had been bombarded with appeals for them to dig into their pockets.

Several complaints had been made about Trump-sponsored emails about donations, becoming recurring payments.

Melania's birthday has not been the only cause for Republican celebration over the past few days, as it was confirmed Donald Trump is to launch a new website to share his voice.

The businessman turned politician is hitting back at bans from Twitter and Facebook by starting his own "pro-free speech" social media platform.

An email said: "It's being designed to be PRO-FREE SPEECH. There won't be any Big Tech censors trying to muzzle Conservatives for sharing FACTS."
