The former US President sat down with US media company The Skimm to speak about his memoir ‘A Promised Land’. Mr Obama also praised Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, the former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh and Pope Francis.

He said: “World leaders I’d want in a group text?

“The Dalai Lama. Love that guy. Pope Francis, a genuinely good man.

“Angela Merkel. Prime Minister Singh.

“Maybe I’d throw Queen Elizabeth in there just because she has a drier sense of humour than people think.”

Mr Obama’s comments come as the Royal Family is facing a backlash due to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The tell-all discussion aired in the US on Sunday evening on CBS and then in the UK on Monday night on ITV.

According to CBS, nearly 50 million people across the world have watched Meghan and Harry’s sit-down with Oprah.

A poll by Morning Consult found that the Sussexes’ popularity in the US has surged.

The poll of 2,220 US adults pre-interview and 838 post-interview revealed that Meghan’s popularity increased from 45 percent to 67 percent after the Oprah chat.

Harry’s favourability also surged among Americans from 46 percent to 69 percent.

In response to the Sussexes’ allegations in the interview, Buckingham Palace said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

In 2016, Mr Obama said the Queen was one of his favourite people during a three-day tour of the UK.

Speaking at his Downing Street press conference in 2016, he said: “She is truly one of my favourite people.”

The former President added: “I confess I’ve also come back to wish Her Majesty the Queen a happy 90th birthday.”

Mr Obama and the Former First Lady Michelle Obama visited the Queen at Windsor Castle on their UK trip.

The ex-President said: “Earlier today Michelle and I had the honour to join Her Majesty and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh as their guests at Windsor Castle where we conveyed the good wishes of the American people.”

At the time, Prince Philip drove the Obamas from their helicopter to the castle.

Mr Obama explained: “I have to say I have never been driven by a Duke of Edinburgh before and I can report that it was very smooth riding.”
