A Disneyland is going to be a "super" Covid-19 vaccination site, it has been revealed.

The iconic California theme park will be used as one of several large distribution sites opening up in the state as cases soar with hospitals nearing full capacity.

California has lagged behind in its vaccination rate, using only a third of its doses so far.

The so-called "happiest place on Earth" will become the region's first "super" distribution site from next Monday, county officials have confirmed.

The state reported just under 40,000 new cases on Monday and 264 deaths, with California ranking 42nd out of the 50 US states in its vaccination rate according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Disneyland has been closed to visitors since mid-March when the coronavirus pandemic first struck, but its sister resort, Walt Disney World in Florida, has been open to reduced numbers of guests since July.

The theme park will have the capacity to vaccinate thousands of people daily.

California Governor Gaving Newsom said: "We recognise that the current strategy is not going to get us to where we need to go as quickly as we all need to go.

"That's why we're speeding up the administration not just for priority groups but opening up large sites to do so."

California is the state with the third highest death rate in the USA, which is the country with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world with almost 400,000.

Los Angeles County's top public health official, Barbara Ferrer, added: "The damaging impact to our families and our local hospitals from this surge is the worst disaster our county has experienced for decades."
