Punters were seen dancing on the streets in a bid to make the most of their last night before parts of the country move into stricter Tier 3 lockdown.

Londoners partied the night away in the city before rules kicked in at 00:01am on Wednesday morning in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus before Christmas.

Boozers were singing and dancing in Soho enjoying their last night of freedom in large groups, despite Tier 2 restrictions already in place.

The government's Tier 2 rules state you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place.

Ahead of Tier 3, Wetherspoons announced selling real ales for just 99p in parts of England to make the most of the few hours of eased rules.

Further restrictions from today mean pubs and restaurants will not be able to serve seated customers, and only serve takeaway food.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on Monday that the whole of London will face the toughest coronavirus measures from Wednesday at 12am, along with areas in Essex and Hertfordshire.

But excited drinkers took advantage of the final night and managed to grab their last orders with pals.

It comes as weekend plans across London and parts of Hertfordshire and Essex were thrown out the window on Monday when Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced these areas would face tougher coronavirus restrictions.

The main thing residents shifting from Tier 2 to 3 will be leaving behind is the ability to eat and drink out at a pub or restaurant.

Businesses have fought hard to recoup losses but now prepare for another blow as punters are told to follow tougher guidelines once again.

Pictures taken in Central London last night showed people chanting away and dancing together as police patrolled the streets.

The tougher restrictions have been imposed amid rising coronavirus cases.

However, Tier 3 dwellers do not have to give up are getting a haircut, shopping for non-essential items and, bizarrely, a relaxing spa day with a sauna and steam room.
