Michael Gove has admitted that Brexit negotiations are getting “close to the wire” as the transition period lies a month away now. The Cabinet minister told BBC Radio 4 that he “fervently” hoped that a deal would be secured, especially because it would be in both the interests of the UK and European Union. Mr Gove also hit back at criticisms that the Government had not given British businesses enough certainty over the outcome of a deal.

The MP said: “Yes it is getting close to the wire. That’s why I think it is important that we do get a deal if we possibly can.

“I think it’s in our interest, and certainly in the EU’s interest.

“Whether we have a free trade agreement or not, and I fervently hope that we do, broadly 80 percent of what business needs to do is the same anyway.

“To be fair, businesses have stepped up to the plate and have made those changes.”
