Former staff member shares how to get a job working for the Royal Family

Always wanted to know what it’s like to be a Royal?

Well, the closest you’ll most likely get is if you get a job working for the Royal Family.

Royal staff are often required to sign strict non-disclosure agreements, according to Insider.

Because of this, little is known about what goes on behind the walls of Buckingham Palace or Kensington Palace.

But if you’re in the market for a new job, and really want to know – you could apply for a job there yourself.

There are many different jobs within the Royal Household – from chefs, financial accountants and digital communication experts to helicopter pilots and painting conservators.

Before you apply for the job, you will need to check you are eligible.

Firstly, you will need to be a British citizen, or have the legal right to work in the UK.

Secondly, you will have to go through a vigorous security check.

In order to find out the knowledge, experience and skills needed, you will need to check the individual job adverts.

At the current time of writing (October 21 2020) the only position being advertised for is a Housekeeping Assistant at Windsor Castle.

For this role you will follow a structured 13 month training programme to “gain specialist technical skills that will form the foundations of your housekeeping career”.

In order to apply for this job, candidates need to have a qualification in both English and Maths.

The skills they required for that role was someone with “excellent interpersonal skills”, and someone who has “articulate, engaging and accurate writing skills”.

In addition, they had to have a “good news sense, good judgement, sensitivity and willingness to help others”.

Earlier in 2020, the Queen herself was looking for someone to help refurbish Buckingham Palace.

To be considered you had to have a background working in construction and be a “good communicator”.

James Upsher, who has worked for the Royal Household, offered Hello! some tips on how to increase your chances of getting hired.

He told the publication: "Keep your language tight to the job description, answer the points they have asked for and add what makes you special – but don’t overdo it."

According to James, the golden rule is to never say the words: "I have always dreamed of working for the Royal Family."

He added: ”Of course, you should have a line mentioning your great respect for the institution, but play this one very cool to stay out of the 'no' pile."
