A 15-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of his uncle and stealing $7,000 – around £5,430.
Teen Charles Alexander allegedly shot popular football coach Corey Smith, 46, in Miami, Florida, US last Monday after neighbours heard three gunshots.
Police rushed to the PE teacher’s home but he was already dead.
Schoolboy Charles told police he had been in the bathroom when he heard the shots fired and came out to find his uncle dead.
They quizzed him for two days over the shooting but later let him go. He then confessed the murder to his mum who told police because she feared he could target her, it is claimed.
A police search found wads of cash stashed in the teen’s jeans which were stuffed inside a garbage bag.
Corey's wife told officers he kept a large amount of cash in his bedroom, along with his 9mm Beretta gun that killed him.
The boy had lived with his uncle and his wife before and "was familiar with its layout", officers revealed.
His dad Lamar Alexander – killed in a shootout last year – was reportedly Corey's cousin. But the pair were so close growing up that Charles thought of his victim as his uncle.
Charles’ mum said her son had suffered with mental health problems. He has been charged with second-degree murder and armed grand theft.
His dad Lamar Alexander, who spent years in jail for robberies, was killed by police in a dramatic shootout in Miami last year.
The Miami Herald reported he carried out "one final heist that left two innocent people dead and cost them their own lives".
He was one of two gunmen who "robbed a Coral Gables jewelry store, hijacked a UPS truck and led a squadron of police cars on a high-speed chase before a climactic gun battle in the middle of choked rush-hour traffic".
UPS driver as Frank Ordonez was later identified as one of the victims.
Corey, who was a well-known football coach at Miami Senior High School, said at the time: “In life, you gotta make better decisions.
"We weren’t raised like that. I love my brother, but he’s been making bad decisions his whole life.”
