4 min read

NHL: Chicago Blackhawks at Columbus Blue Jackets

Dylan Strome and Erik Gustafsson each scored in the third period as the visiting Chicago Blackhawks rallied from a two-goal deficit on Sunday to record a 3-2 shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have earned a point in 10 straight contests.

Chicago halved its deficit on a goal from Strome at 7:33 into the third period. The Blackhawks tied the game on their fourth power-play chance of the game, courtesy of Gustafsson’s blast with 2:02 left in regulation.

Robin Lehner made 31 saves while captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored in the shootout as Chicago won for the fourth time in five games.

Columbus thought it had won in overtime, but defenseman Zach Werenski’s shot that was initially called a goal as time expired was washed out following review.

Flyers 2, Ducks 1 (OT)

Kevin Hayes scored a goal with 67 seconds remaining in overtime to lift visiting Philadelphia past Anaheim.

After scoreless second and third periods, Hayes found himself on a breakaway with a shootout fast approaching and was able to beat Ducks goaltender John Gibson for his 12th goal of the season off a long pass from Jakub Voracek.

Flyers goalie Brian Elliott made 27 saves in the victory, while Gibson made 33 saves for the Ducks.

Stars 4, Coyotes 2

Roope Hintz’s late tiebreaking goal was one of four Dallas tallies in the third period during a come-from-behind victory over host Arizona in Glendale.

A night after an overtime shootout win at home over Colorado, Dallas scored the game’s final four goals Sunday for its second straight win. Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist, Alexander Radulov scored his 11th of the season and Mattias Janmark scored an empty-net goal for the Stars.

Arizona, once the Pacific Division leader, has lost three straight games in regulation for the first time this season. Conor Garland scored a goal and assisted on another, and Taylor Hall scored his first goal at Gila River Arena for his new team.

Devils 4, Senators 3 (OT)

Rookie Jack Hughes scored on a breakaway 54 seconds into overtime as visiting New Jersey edged Ottawa.

Kyle Palmieri’s clearing pass hit Hughes in stride near center ice. Hughes, the top pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, easily eluded the Senators’ Jean-Gabriel Pageau and shuffled the puck before beating Craig Anderson for his first career NHL overtime goal.

Nico Hischier, Nikita Gusev and Miles Wood also scored for the Devils, who have collected points in five of their last seven games (4-2-1). Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood made 20 saves.

Blues 4, Jets 1

Jaden Schwartz scored twice as host St. Louis beat Winnipeg for its eighth consecutive victory.

Ryan O’Reilly and Robert Thomas also scored, and Jordan Binnington made 25 saves for the Blues, who are 10-1-1 against the Central Division this season.

Nicholas Shore scored, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 24 of 27 shots for the Jets, who have lost six of their last eight games.

Islanders 3, Wild 1

Ryan Pulock and Matt Martin scored the tying and go-ahead goals in a span of 97 seconds early in the third period to help visiting New York snap a three-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota in St. Paul.

Tom Kuhnhackl added an insurance goal with 2:31 left for the Islanders, who were outscored 14-9 during their skid. Goalie Semyon Varlamov made 25 saves as New York won in regulation for the first time since a 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Dec. 12.

Ryan Donato scored in the first period for the Wild, who saw their two-game winning streak end. Goalie Devan Dubnyk recorded 25 saves.

Bruins 3, Sabres 2

Jake DeBrusk scored two power-play goals over an 18-second span in the third period, and Tuukka Rask finished with 24 saves to lead Boston past visiting Buffalo.

David Pastrnak scored his league-leading 29th goal and also had an assist for the Bruins, who improved their NHL-best home record to 14-1-8. Steven Kampfer added two assists as Boston swept a post-Christmas home-and-home with the Sabres.

Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal and an assist, and Curtis Lazar also scored a goal for Buffalo, which lost for the fifth time in six games. Linus Ullmark had 19 saves.

Lightning 2, Red Wings 1

Brayden Point scored a power-play goal early in the third period and Tampa Bay posted a narrow victory over visiting Detroit.

Ondrej Palat had the other goal for the Lightning, who have won three straight. Curtis McElhinney made 19 saves as Tampa Bay won the first of four meetings with Detroit this season.

Robby Fabbri scored the only goal for the reeling Red Wings, who have lost six straight. They also dropped a one-goal decision to Florida on Saturday. Jonathan Bernier kept Detroit in it until the final buzzer, stopping 37 shots.

Panthers 6, Canadiens 5

Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals and added two assists to lead host Florida over Montreal in Sunrise, Fla.

Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov posted two goals and one assist. Panthers second-line winger Noel Acciari added his eighth goal in his past six games. Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson also scored on a shot that was nearly deflected out front by Huberdeau for what would’ve been the first hat trick of his career.

Montreal got goals from Tomas Tatar, Jeff Petry, Max Domi, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Shea Weber.

Canucks 5, Flames 2

Tyler Myers and Tanner Pearson both scored twice and added an assist to lead visiting Vancouver to a convincing win over Calgary.

The Canucks increased their winning streak to five games.

Goaltender Thatcher Demko made 23 saves, while Jake Virtanen collected one goal and one assist for the Canucks, who moved ahead of the Flames and into third place in the Pacific Division standings.
